Saint Nicholas Parish Museum

In 2019 I had the opportunity to visit the Parroquia Museo San Nicolas in Valencia, a fascinating building. When you visit this building, you cannot imagine what you are going to find, since its access is quite austere and hidden, and when you enter you are speechless.

It is a church with a single nave of six sections with side chapels between the buttresses. The entire Gothic interior is covered with baroque decoration, where the frescoes are one of the main attractions. The Gothic vaults, pillars and walls were covered with scenes from the life of San Nicolás de Bari and San Pedro Mártir.

It was in the 15th century, the Valencian Golden Age, when the temple was rebuilt, going from Gothic architecture to Neo-Gothic architecture and finally filling in the pointed arches, turning them into semicircular arches that allowed the realization of the pictorial work. It is a building that allows us to see all the interventions from different times.

The building is an example of adaptation to the change from Gothic to Baroque, the predominant taste of the time and a spectacle in all its religious decoration.

En el 2019 tuve la oportunidad de visitar la Parroquia Museo San Nicolas en Valencia, un edificio fascinante. Cuando visitas este edificio, no te imaginas lo que te vas a encontrar, ya que su acceso es bastante austero y oculto, y cuando entras te quedas boquiabierto.

Se trata de una iglesia de una sola nave de seis tramos con capillas laterales entre los contrafuertes. Todo el interior gótico esta recubierto con decoración barroca, donde los frescos son uno de los atractivos principales. Se recubrió las bóvedas góticas, pilares y muros con escenas de la vida de San Nicolás de Bari y de San Pedro Mártir.

Fue en el siglo XV, el Siglo de Oro valenciano, cuando el templo fue reconstruido pasando de arquitectura gótica, a neogótica y finalmente rellenando los arcos apuntados, convirtiéndolos en arcos de medio punto que permitieron la realización de la obra pictórica. Es un edificio que nos permite ver todas las intervenciones a partir de las diferentes épocas.

El edificio es un ejemplo de adaptación al cambio del gótico al barroco, gusto predominante de la época y un espéctalo en toda su decoración religiosa.
