Basílica Santa María del Mar

In 2020 I had the opportunity to visit the Basilica of Santa Maria del Mar, a fascinating Catholic church. Walking around Barcelona, in the La Ribera neighborhood, reaching the Plaza de Santa Maria, you will find this jewel of Catalan Gothic, the work of the masters Berenguer Montagut and Ramón Despuig.
Between the XIII y XV centuries the neighborhood was the economic heart of the city and as an interesting fact, the construction of the Basilica was at the same time with the Cathedral of Barcelona. The cathedral was conceived for the monarchy and the nobility, however, the Basilica of Santa Maria del Mar was made by the people and for the people, especially from the port area and the neighborhood La Ribera, where the "bastaixos" were the main workforce.
The Basilica is made of stone from the Montjuic quarry. Its main façade is framed between two towers and a rose window in the center. Inside we can see pointed arches of great height forming 3 naves giving the feeling of grandeur, and its main feature, an austere Gothic, without ornamentation and slender pillars.
You can go up to its roof and observe emblematic places of Barcelona such as the Agbar Tower, La Monumental, the Hotel W, Montjuic, the cable car, the Cathedral among others, a spectacular view.It is simply a jewel of Gothic architecture; you cannot miss visiting this great church.

En el 2020 tuve la oportunidad de visitar la basílica de Santa María del Mar, una iglesia católica fascinante. Paseando por Barcelona, en el barrio La Ribera llegando a la Plaza de Santa Maria te encuentras con esta joya del gótico catalán, obra de los maestros Berenguer Montagut y Ramón Despuig
Entre los siglos XIII y XV el barrio fue el corazón económico de la ciudad y como dato interesante, la construcción de la Basílica fue a la par con la Catedral de Barcelona. La catedral fue concebida para la monarquía y la nobleza, sin embargo, la Basílica de santa maria del mar fue hecha por el pueblo y para ellos, especialmente feligreses de la zona del puerto y el barrio La Ribera, donde los "bastaixos" fueron la mano de obra principal.
La Basílica está hecha de piedra proveniente de la cantera del Montjuic. Su fachada principal, se enmarca entre dos torres y un rosetón en el centro. En su interior podemos observar arcos apuntados de gran altura formando 3 naves dando la sensación de grandeza, y su principal característica, un gótico austero, sin ornamentación y de pilares esbeltos.
Puedes subir a su cubierta y observar lugares emblemáticos de Barcelona como la Torre Agbar, La Monumental, el Hotel W, el Montjuic, el teleférico, la Catedral entre otros, una vista espectacular.
Simplemente es una joya de la arquitectura gótica, no puedes dejar de visitar esta gran iglesia.
